High Desert Test Kitchen
June ingredient: EPHEDRA or TUTUT
June 18, 2018 at copper mountain mesa community center

This month we’ll be working with a rather eerily beautiful and common desert dweller, ephedra. If you’re familiar with this plant, you may know it by another name. But I’ll encourage you to forget that one and read this story. Even if you are not familiar with this plant, I think you should read this story:

Strap on your crash helmet and get ready for a motorcycle trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats with Rachel Kushner in her novel The Flamethrowers. This is but one aspect of this well written book, spanning the New York art scene of the 1970's to the battlefields of WW1. I predict we will have much to talk about when we meet in Landers at Colin and Amy's place at 7:00 pm on June 4th.

2018 Gem/Mineral Expo and Postcard Series
pop-up at the hammer museum store
april 3 through september 30, 2018 in los angeles

We are excited to announce that our annual High Desert Test Sites Gem/Mineral Expo will be hosted this year at the Hammer Museum Store as part of the A-Z West Works pop-up, organized by Andrea Zittel. Each year the HDTS Gem/Mineral Expo features a spectacular array of stones for sale at prices from $2 to $200. Stones are sourced from Quartzite, Arizona where vendors of rocks, gems, minerals, fossils and everything else imaginable create one of the largest open air gem/mineral flea markets in the world.

Also in connection with the pop-up we are releasing our 2018 Limited Edition Postcard Series. This year’s postcard edition features twelve photographs of the desert by Sarah Lyon. The group of images titled “From Nowhere to There" has been generated over the course of two decades of cross country travel through the desert and beyond. The full set of postcards are also available on our online store and at the HDTS HQ.

desert town by ramona stewart

The 1946 novel Desert Town by Ramona Stewart has brothels, car chases, gangsters, cowboys, crooked cops, a love struck teenage girl and tons of thinly veiled homosexuality. What more could you ask for? Well it was also made into the film noir movie Desert Fury, shot in Technicolor, with a very young Burt Lancaster in 1947! Come join us at the Glass Outhouse on Monday, May 7th at 7:00pm where we will discuss the book and watch the movie outdoors when it gets dark enough. There seem to be quite a few used copies floating around online. I think the cover art on my Pocket Book is fantastic.
