PLUS, we'll be open additional hours THIS SATURDAY, December 8, from 5 - 8 pm. Scout Katie will be hosting a map making workshop, Angela will be sharing her signature raw vegan treats, and Peggy will be doing tarot card readings. And did we mention there will be free veggie stew? BYOBowl and spoon - or better yet, buy a bowl next door at our new neighbors bkb ceramics and one of the nifty camping cutlery sets on sale at the HDTS HQ! (Extra bonus - all proceeds benefit future HDTS programming!)
And don't forget to check out what's new in the project room in the back of the HQ! We're now screening The Legend of Rosalie, a wonderful 10-minute documentary by filmmaker Nicholas Berger that tells the story of Rosalie, a beautiful and mysterious woman who built a library out of salvaged objects more than 200 feet below sea level in the little desert community of Slab City. And speaking of libraries, browse our growing desert library. (We're always looking for suggestions for new additions to our library, too, so let us know if you think of anything we're missing!) Save the date for the Joshua Tree branch of the Reanimation Library as well, which will be coming to the HDTS HQ project room February 16 - March 31, 2013.
One last thing, we have some new Scout's programming at the HQ. Scout Katie has a new weekly class, Art in the Environment for Desert Kids, and we started a Scout's Book Club! All are invited to join us once a month as we read and talk about a new book about space and desert life. (This month's selection is Edward Abbey's classic Desert Solitaire; last month was Storming the Gates of Paradise by Rebecca Solnit.)
