This self-published series is the final outcome of our Scout Residency program—launched in 2012. Unlike many residencies, where an outside artist is brought in to create work along the lines of their existing practice, the Scout Residency is centered less on the production of an artwork, and more on learning, engaging, interpreting, and ultimately reflecting new insight and perspective on the places and people that we interact with on a daily basis. Scouts are dedicated to connecting with the diverse people and places that make up our ever-evolving high desert community.
The Scout Series collects and presents the cumulated individual experiences of our residents. Our first two Scouts were Katie Bachler and Katherine Ball, each of whom spent time meeting with, interviewing, and getting to know a wide range of individuals. Their resulting books reflect interests and insights gained from these engagements: from the vernacular to the environmentally conscious; the poetic to the activist.
The Scout Book Program and Scout Book Series is supported in part by a grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
